  • Americans across party lines think it was right for AG Merrick Garland to appoint a special counsel to investigate Biden’s classified documents scandal
  • Two-thirds of poll respondents say the whole ordeal is a ‘serious problem’
  • 57% say that they disapprove of the Biden White House handling of the situation

A commanding 84 percent of Americans agree with Attorney General Merrick Garland‘s appointment of a special counsel to probe President Joe Biden‘s classified documents scandal – and 67 percent feel the whole ordeal is a ‘serious problem.’

Opinions on the further investigation into Biden are pretty consistent across political and party affiliations, according to a new CNN/SSRS poll released Wednesday.

Only 16 percent of respondents overall say they disapprove of the appointment of a special counsel to investigate the president’s mishandling of classified information during and following his time as former President Barack Obama‘s vice president.

Eighty percent of Democrats approve of the appointment, while 88 percent of Republicans feel the same – and in the middle of the two sits independent voters, who have an 84 percent approval of the move.

Biden’s attorneys found and informed the Justice Department of the former VP taking classified documents from the White House to his personal residence in Wilmington, Delaware, as well as to his think tank in Washington, D.C. after leaving office.

Subsequent searches by attorneys and the DOJ led to the discovery of more materials, which lands somewhere between 25 and 30 now.

The same polls from CNN shows that more than two-thirds of the 1,004 respondents feel that Biden taking these classified documents from the White House is a ‘serious problem.’

Thirty percent say it is ‘very serious’ while the remaining 36 percent say it is ‘somewhat serious’ – while 33 percent of respondents said it was either ‘not too’ or ‘not at all serious.’

Many have defended the Biden document scandal by saying he handled it better than former President Donald Trump, whose home was raided by the FBI in August to recover thousands of classified documents and sensitive materials from his Florida Mar-a-Lago residence in Palm Beach.

Still, 57 percent of respondents polled January 19-22 say that they disapprove of the Biden White House handling of the situation.

Biden has widely ignored questions related to the latest revelation – especially after reports proved that the document discovery happened before the 2022 midterm elections, and was likely hidden to prevent negative repercussions to Democratic campaigns.

While Biden has not yet officially announced a reelection run, he has always indicated that it was his intention to serve for two terms.

It’s unclear how the classified documents scandal could influence those future aspirations.

When it comes to the Biden administration’s handling of the scandal, the partisan gap widens.

Seventy-four percent of Democrats approve of how Biden handled the discovery of these documents, while 85 percent of Republicans disapprove.

Independents, perhaps the most important voting bloc to take note of in these polls, disapprove by a 62 percent to 38 percent margin.
