£6BILLION Black Friday spending spree

£6BILLION Black Friday spending spree: Britons will spend £400m more than in 2019 but average spend will increase as less shoppers splash out due to Covid pandemic, says survey

  • Research suggests the average shopper will spend £296, up from £251 in 2019
  • Total estimated spend of £6billion marks an increase of £400million on last year
  • However, the number of Britons who plan to take part is down to 20.3million

Britons are set to spend a staggering £6billion in the Black Friday sales, a survey claimed today.

Research has suggested the average shopper will spend £296 as prices plummet on November 27 – a rise of 18 per cent on last year’s £251.

The total estimated spend of £6billion will also mark an increase of £400million on 2019, when it was expected £5.6billion would be spent.

But despite the rising figures, the number of Britons who plan to partake in the annual sale has decreased from 22.1million last year to 20.3million.

This eight per cent fall is likely a result of the financial hardships many have suffered due to the coronavirus pandemic.

However, 16.3 million (31 per cent) are still undecided about their participation meaning the overall figure could soar to 36.6million.

Last year, annual research by shopping comparison site finder.com found 56 per cent of Black Friday shoppers would take part in the sale online.

This has increased by 10 per cent for this November.

But not all Black Friday shoppers are planning to ditch stores. The research found that 28 per cent of Britons will shop both online and in-store.

This means 94 per cent of shoppers expect they will purchase items online in November, while only six per cent will shop solely in stores.

Men are expected to fork out 44 per cent more than woman, racking up an average spend of £349 compared to £243.

Elsewhere, millennials plan to spend the most with an average spend of £372 while the younger Generation Z plan to part with only £130 on Black Friday.

Despite this, more people in Generation Z plan to partake in the sales than any other age group.

The research also found Londoners intend to spend the most on November 27 – with the average spend around £126 above the national average.

Those in Yorkshire and the Humber plan to spend the least.

Georgia-Rose Johnson, shopping expert at finder..com said: ‘With the pandemic and lockdown causing such disruption to people’s lives and careers, you might expect people to shut their wallets this Black Friday weekend and for overall spend to fall.

‘While this does appear to be the case in the sense that the number of people participating is predicted to decrease, overall spend is actually set to be higher.

‘This means those taking part will be spending significantly more than last year and is perhaps an example of how Britain is becoming financially divided.

‘Many have experienced great financial difficulty this year, but some people are actually better off as a result of not having to commute and a lower spend on socialising.

‘For these people, the weekend of sales could be an opportunity for some retail therapy.’
