A toddler was caught fighting off the urge to sleep as he battled to finish his  McDonald’s Happy Meal – but his eyes closed each time he tried to take a bite.

Mother-of-two Elise Gibson, 24, from Wigan, Greater Manchester, had been treating her one-year-old son Tommy James Sankey to Chicken McNuggets and fries for lunch when she sat him in front of the TV.

However Ms Gibson soon began filming the infant on her phone when she saw her child shaking himself awake in a bid to carry on with his meal for 15 minutes.

During the clip, which was captured on January 25, Tommy repeatedly closes his eyes each time he tries to battle his way through a nugget.

The toddler then shakes himself awake and takes another bite of the food item.

Ms Gibson said she had been out for a walk with Tommy and his brother Owen when she perched them in front of the TV so they could enjoy their lunch together.

The stay-at-home mother said: ‘He was so determined to make it through his meal.

‘Happy Meals are his favourite food. He eats all food, but he especially loves Chicken McNuggets and chips.

‘I could see his eyes going. He kept waking up. He does this all the time. He was knackered that day so he fell asleep, woke up and carried on eating.

‘He’d put some to his mouth, eat it, then go to sleep again.

‘He had all his chips spilt down him because he kept drifting off and missing his mouth.

‘He was doing this for about 10 to 15 minutes before he actually fell asleep. Then he woke up again and carried on eating.

‘It was so funny. Hopefully it’ll make people smile.’

Ms Gibson has joked that she will be keeping the clip for Tommy’s 18th birthday to share with his friends.

She added: ‘I thought I’d get him a Happy Meal for lunch and he fell asleep while eating it.

‘It was such a challenge for him. It’s like me when I’m drunk.

‘I’ll be saving this for his 18th birthday so I can show it to all his friends.

‘His brother always laughs at him.

‘People have been saying how cute he is. My friends know what he’s like for his food – he absolutely loves it.’
