Liverpool have been handed a major fitness boost with goalkeeper Alisson reportedly back in training ahead of a possible return at the end of the month.

The shot-stopper has been out of action since injuring his shoulder in training before the Reds’ 7-2 defeat at Aston Villa with initial fears he was set for six weeks on the sidelines.

But the Liverpool Echo report that the Brazilian is recovering well and has already started individual sessions at Melwood, including diving and falling. The club are said to be confident that the ‘keeper will not aggravate the problem and could be ready to return to face West Ham on October 31.

It will be a huge relief for Jurgen Klopp who has had a nightmare few days following the confirmation of Virgil van Dijk’s anterior cruciate ligament injury.

The defender was forced off in the first half of the Merseyside derby after a tackle from Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford. 

The Dutchman faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines and his absence could put a huge dent in Liverpool’s hopes for a successive Premier League title.

Joel Matip is also being monitored ahead of the Champions League tie with Ajax on Tuesday.

Sportsmail understands that the defender underwent a scan after the game regarding a muscle issue, although the concern was cleared by doctors in a huge relief to the Reds.

Klopp will now decide whether to play the 29-year-old, who has only recently returned from an injury setback, amid a busy week for the Premier League champions.

Liverpool travel to Amsterdam on Wednesday night for their Champions League group clash with Ajax, before hosting Sheffield United at Anfield this weekend.
