American woman is left baffled after discovering how Australians wash and dry their clothes at home – but are you surprised by the process?

  • TikTok star Miranda Blakeslee was shocked to learn Australians air-dry clothes
  • The American posted a video asking Aussies to explain why dryers are not used
  • The clip has gone viral with many Australians flocking to the comment section

An American woman who was left baffled after discovering how Australians wash and dry their clothes has taken to the internet demanding answers.

US TikTok star Miranda Blakeslee, who posts under the account @mirandaknows, was surprised to learn Aussies do not seem to use dryers.

‘Here in America when we do our laundry days we put everything in the washer and then take it out and put it in the dryer. And then within 20-30 minutes everything is dry and you just put it away in the closets and stuff,’ she said.

‘In Australia almost every single influencer I see that does laundry day takes it from the washer and then hangs it up throughout their house on these drying racks.’

The social media sensation asked whether it was because there were no dryers Down Under or if they were ‘not a thing’ for environmental reasons.

‘Is it like a pollution thing or something? Please let me know if you’re like living in Australia and you don’t own a dryer, is there a reason for that?’ She said.

‘I just don’t understand.’

The clip rapidly went viral attracting more than 36,000 reactions, as thousands of Australians flocked to the comments section to offer insight.

‘We hang it out because it is warm enough to dry quickly and electricity is ridiculously expensive,’ one person wrote.

Another added: ‘1. It is better for the environment.  2. It is better for our clothes.  3. We do have dryers.’

‘The real question should be why do Americans use a dryer when the sun and wind is free?’ A third said.

‘The sun is the dryer mate. It’s free and won’t make ya clothes shrink,’ another Aussie wrote.

Some Australians were just as shocked to learn that clothes-cleaning rituals were very different abroad, with one asking why air-drying lines were not used in the States.

In a follow up video addressing the question, Miranda explained some Americans  ‘do use a clothes line’ but ‘it’s not really common unless you’re living in like a rural area’.

‘So most Americans have full sized washers and dryers and we use the washer and the dryer and the electricity bill doesn’t really make a difference,’ she said.
