Asda is named Britain’s cheapest supermarket for Christmas shopping costing £31 less than Waitrose

Asda have been named the cheapest supermarket in Britain to shop for Christmas.

A new report, from trade magazine The Grocer, found the average cost of a Christmas shop at Asda, was £6.33 less than its nearest rival, making it the best value shop for the seventh year running. 

The shop of 33 festive items, which included a turkey crown, pigs in blankets, Brussels sprouts and a Christmas pudding, found that Asda’s total cost is £91.22, while the same items at Waitrose cost £122.20.

The Grocer buys 33 items every week from UK shops including Asda, Waitrose, Sainsburys, Tesco and Morrisons – in order to compare the cheapest and most expensive goods. 

Asda’s turkey crown costing £12 was £3 cheaper than Tesco, £5 less than Morrisons and Waitrose, with Sainsbury’s having the most expensive centrepiece at £5.50.  

In third place was Tesco,  who were only a few pence more expensive than Morrisons while the Sainsbury’s shop took the total over £100.

The report also found that doing your Christmas shopping at Sainsbury’s will set you back £104.76.

Unsurprisingly, upmarket retailer Waitrose were top of the most expensive list, with their shop costing £122.20.

On average, a two litre bottle of 7UP cost £1.33 - it was the cheapest at Asda and Morrisons, costing £1 and most expensive at Sainsburys, costing £1.65

Coke Zero cost £1.95 at Asda, Sainsbury's and Tesco.  It was £1.99 at Waitrose and was the most expensive at Morrisons at £2
