Australia Cafe 63 divides diners over its lengthy 15-page menu

A cafe has divided diners for its ‘overwhelming’ 15-page menu with unusual options including a ‘Liz Hurley rump steak’, an ‘I Dream of Jeannie toasted sandwich’ and an ‘Elle Macpherson scrambled eggs’ with crispy diced bacon.

Cafe 63, which has 38 venues around Australia, has been turning heads with its amusing yet bizarre menu offering, with many customers claiming it takes up to ‘half an hour to read’.

The menu has been doing the rounds on social media after a customer shared a witty minute-by-minute commentary on Twitter when they noticed ‘every dish has its own name’ but has no clear reason why.

‘They have the most insane menu I have ever seen in any restaurant ever. It is 15 pages long, has no rhyme or reason,’ the tweet goes.

Upon opening the menu, diners are greeted with a ‘full two column page’ containing 95 different side options they can order with their meal.

‘I don’t know why I would need to add 200g of lamb’s fry to my meal. I also don’t know why they felt the need to tell me that I can get 20g of chilli or three lemon slices for free,’ the customer wrote.

Clearly confused, the diner noticed a handful of dishes named after Disney characters, TV shows from the 50s, government policies and sporting athletes that ‘bear no relationship to one another’.

‘Your mind races to try to find meaning in this menu, you look to the omelette – oh, Australian athletes? Stephanie Rice gets a gong because she’s from the same area as the first Cafe 63?’ the Tweeter continues.

‘Everywhere you look, the menu takes on less and less meaning. Minced beef on toast? Police. Eggs with sausages? Carbon Tax. Scrambled eggs with bacon and hash browns? Elle MacPherson.’

On the kids lunch and dinner menu, the customer noticed the dishes are named after Disney characters – including ‘Grumpy’ ice cream, Snow White pasta fettuccine and Woody beef patty burger.

‘Your eyes start to dart around the menu… you spot more Disney characters. Finally, you hope, some coherence,’ the commentary continued.

‘But your hopes are dashed when you see dishes named after sitcoms that no child born in the last 30 years has seen, let alone heard of,’ the diner wrote, referring to Hogan’s Heroes chicken burger, named after US TV sitcom inspired by World War II.

‘Oh, and in case you though they were limiting 1960s sitcoms to the kids menu, I dream of Jeannie makes an inexplicable cameo on the sandwich menu.’

The last page of dishes appears to be named after the white daffodil.

‘The dishes feature the inexplicable ‘Ice Wings’ – presumably named after an all white daffodil, famous for its similarity to a pulled lamb shank with mashed potatoes, gravy and seasonal vegetables,’ they tweeted.

Giving their verdict on the menu, the diner wrote: ‘And finally, what I consider the pièce de résistance of the entire menu.

‘If I told you there was a dish called the ‘Liz Hurley’, what would you think was on it? Something sweet? Who f**king knows. Anyway, it absolutely wouldn’t be steak, topped with bacon and hollandaise.’

The menu has since gone viral, with scores of regular customers saying while they ‘find the menu incredibly overwhelming’, the meals are ‘delicious and affordable’.

‘The menu may be complicated and a little discombobulated but nothing takes away the fact that my daughter loves “Alicia is back” any day of the week,’ one mum wrote.

Another said: ‘Love this place! Every food item they sell is on the extras menu so you can make your own personalised meal each time. Best idea ever! Mustn’t be too bad a place as they are always booked out.’

One woman said: ‘My husband is a chef and lost his mind the first time we went there purely from a professional standpoint. But it’s a great cafe.’

Another added: ‘Absolutely love Cafe 63. Yep the menu is massive but that’s the best part. They cater to everyone! The staff are always super friendly, the food comes out fast and the coffee is hot.’

While one said: ‘I go to this cafe and the people that work there are so lovely and food is great. The names always make me laugh but why is it bothering people that don’t even go to the cafe?’

Others said they didn’t see any issues with the lengthy menu.

‘What’s wrong with the menu? It’s upbeat and humorous acknowledging some of our greats. So much more that is harmful in this world,’ one wrote.

However, not everyone was satisfied with the menu, with one woman saying: ‘My husband hates going here because he has to read every word on the menu before making the selection… not just the parts in bold.’

‘We eat here often because the prices are great but I find the menu takes half an hour to read it. There are too many choices – how can you possibly have that much fresh produce to make each and every one of those dishes?’ another added.
