Baby is rushed to hospital after being injured when section of Asda roof collapsed at supermarket in Greater Manchester

A baby has been rushed to hospital after the ceiling collapsed at an Asda supermarket, a witness claimed.

The infant, who is believed to be four-weeks-old, was taken to hospital after roof panels from the collapsed ceiling of the Asda store in Ashton-under-Lyne, Greater Manchester landed on the trolley they were was sat in, according to reports.     

Earlier today pictures taken from inside the store appeared to show a section of the ceiling caved in near the self-checkout tills.

Debris could also be seen scattered across the floor of the Cavendish Street supermarket.

Witnesses said customers were evacuated following the incident, which is believed to have happened just before 5pm today. 

A spokesman for the retail giant said an investigation had been launched into the cause of the damage. 

Paul Bowers, who was in the shop at the time that the ceiling collapsed, said: ‘I was walking round and I went down one of the aisles and heard this big bang.

‘They were calling out to everyone to go to the checkout so I went over to see if anyone was hurt.

‘Someone told me that a woman with a pram was right underneath it and managed to get away at the last second.

‘I thought something was kicking off when I first heard it. Next thing there was loads of dust everywhere.

‘They told everyone to stop shopping and leave the building.’
