BAZ BAMIGBOYE: Jodie Comer hopes to kill off rivals in Golden Globe battle royal

Stars of the hit Netflix drama The Crown led the British charge as nominations for the Golden Globe awards were announced yesterday.

But Liverpudlian actress Jodie Comer might yet block Olivia Colman’s seemingly unstoppable dash for glory.

The two are among the nominees for the highly competitive category of best actress in a TV drama series – Miss Colman for her portrayal of the Queen in the third series of The Crown and Miss Comer for hers as a Russian assassin in the BBC‘s Killing Eve.

Others in contention are Nicole Kidman in Big Little Lies and Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon in the Apple TV series The Morning Show.

Colman’s fellow stars in The Crown – Helena Bonham Carter and Tobias Menzies, who play Princess Margaret and the Duke of Edinburgh – are also up for prizes at the Hollywood extravaganza next month.

A total of 20 British stars dominated TV and movie acting categories, including Christian Bale for his role as a motor racing driver in Le Mans ’66 and Dame Emma Thompson for hers as a TV host in Late Night.

South Londoner Cynthia Erivo, meanwhile, received two nominations – one for her role as former slave and anti-slavery activist Harriet Tubman in the film Harriet, and a second for co-writing the movie’s song Stand Up.

In the best performance by an actress in a film drama section, Miss Erivo is competing against Saoirse Ronan in Little Women, Scarlett Johansson in Marriage Story – which led the field with six nominations overall – Charlize Theron in Bombshell and Renee Zellweger in the British-made Judy.

James Bond star Daniel Craig was nominated for his sleuth in the big-screen whodunnit Knives Out.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge, hired by Craig and Barbara Broccoli to help write the script for the new James Bond movie No Time To Die, was nominated for her comic hit Fleabag.

Andrew Scott, who plays the ‘hot priest’ in the same show, was nominated for a supporting actor award. The Golden Globe winners are announced by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association at a ceremony in Beverly Hills on January 5.

Welsh actors Sir Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Pryce were nominated for playing pontiffs Benedict XVI and Pope Francis in the Netflix film The Two Popes. Fellow Welshman Taron Egerton was picked for his portrayal of Sir Elton John in Rocketman.

Pitted against The Two Popes for best motion picture is the blockbuster First World War drama 1917, also nominated for best director (Sam Mendes) and best score (Thomas Newman).

Other British stars nominated include Brian Cox, Kit Harington, Dame Helen Mirren and Emily Watson.

Golden Globes are usually a sign of which films and stars will do well at the Oscars, Baftas and Emmy awards.

Yesterday’s list cemented Netflix’s domination of the entertainment business. The streaming giant behind The Crown, Marriage Story, The Two Popes and The Irishman took 34 nominations across both film and TV disciplines – far ahead of rivals.
