Boris Johnson claims climate change plan won’t hit holidays

Boris Johnson claims he WON’T hit your holidays as he promises by 2050 ‘planes will be zero emission allowing us to fly guilt-free’ under his new plan to tackle climate change

  • Boris Johnson today published his Net Zero Strategy for tackling climate change
  • Document sets out how Government will hit net zero emissions target by 2050
  • PM said the changes will not hit holidays because planes will be ‘zero emission’

Boris Johnson today promised his new blueprint for tackling climate change will not hit holidays.

The Prime Minister dismissed the idea that ‘going green’ has to be ‘inextricably bound up with a sense that we have to sacrifice the things we love’.

He said that by the middle of the century people will be able to fly ‘guilt-free’ because ‘our planes will be zero emission’ thanks to advances in fuel technology.

The PM made the comments in the foreword to his eagerly-awaited Net Zero Strategy which sets out how the nation will reach a target of net zero emissions by 2050.

The document details how different industries will have to make changes in order to reduce emissions.

It acknowledges that some sectors, including aviation, will find it ‘difficult to decarbonise completely’.

The strategy sets an aim for the UK to become a ‘world leader in zero emission flight’.

It states that ‘kick-starting’ the commercial expansion of the UK’s sustainable aviation fuel initiatives will enable people to ‘fly, and connect without guilt’.

Mr Johnson said in his foreword to the document: ‘For years, going green was inextricably bound up with a sense that we have to sacrifice the things we love.

‘But this strategy shows how we can build back greener, without so much as a hair shirt in sight.

‘In 2050, we will still be driving cars, flying planes and heating our homes, but our cars will be electric gliding silently around our cities, our planes will be zero emission allowing us to fly guilt-free, and our homes will be heated by cheap reliable power drawn from the winds of the North Sea.

‘And everywhere you look, in every part of our United Kingdom, there will be jobs. Good jobs, green jobs, well-paid jobs, levelling up our country while squashing down our carbon emissions.

‘That is the clean and prosperous future that awaits every one of us as the UK leads the world in the race to net zero.’

Sustainable aviation fuel, known as SAF, is made from sustainable sources like cooking oil and other animal or plant-based oils.

It is similar in its chemistry to traditional fossil-based jet fuels but it results in lower carbon emissions.

The Government’s strategy includes an ambition to get to 10 per cent sustainable aviation fuel use by 2030.

Ministers are also making £180million available to fund the development of sustainable aviation fuel production plants.
