Bride who was punched by groom’s best-man brother

A newly-wed couple ended their marriage within hours of exchanging vows after the groom’s best man brother beat up his new bride, MailOnline can reveal.

Soldier Steffan Wilson, 25, and his teacher bride Erin Mason-George, 26, have hardly seen each other since their wedding day four months ago.

Friends said the pair have decided to ‘go their separate ways’ after Steffan’s best man, his older brother Tomos Wilson, 29, from Swansea, assaulted the bride, her two sisters and her mother.

Soldier Steffan went home with his family after the boozy wedding party rather than comfort his shocked bride who was left in tears.

A friend of the family said: ‘The marriage was all over in a day which must be some sort of record.

‘They weren’t even married long enough to get a divorce, I’m told they’ve gone for an annulment.

‘The groom had a choice to make – either his wife or his brother and father.

‘When he went back with them that was it, marriage over.’

Former prison officer Tomos Wilson admitted five charges of assault and two of criminal damage after going on the rampage at the stately Falcondale Hotel in the sleepy West Wales university town of Lampeter.

Magistrates at Aberystwyth heard Wilson was helping the drunken bridegroom to bed when he go into a to a row with the in-laws.

The court heard he shouted that his brother should never have married Erin as he dragged her down the stairs. He also said his brother was ‘no longer a Wilson.’

He was ordered to pay £250 compensation to Erin and one of her sisters and £100 to her mother, another sister and the hotel manager.

The family friend said: ‘The marriage ended there on the stairs. There was ructions and the best man ended up being arrested and the groom taken home by his dad.

‘They decided to go their separate ways, it’s probably for the best.

‘The bride is from a good family, I’ve known her father for many years and he’s hard-working family man.

‘He had to step in to break up the fight and he’s not the biggest of blokes.

‘The Wilsons are a big family, very involved with the local rugby club. The boys have a reputation of not being able to handle their beer.’

Mail Online revealed today that Staffan Wilson has been charged with attempted murder in an unconnected incident at a nightclub near his army barracks in Catterick, North Yorkshire, earlier this month.

The soldier, a Section Commander in the Army based at Catterick, North Yorkshire, is accused of beating up taxi driver Noby James, 43, a father-of-two in Northallerton after a night out on December 1.

He has been remanded in custody and will spend Christmas behind bars awaiting trial next year.

Meanwhile supply teacher Erin is back at home living with her parents in their end of terrace house in Lampeter.

Her father Colin George confirmed he was aware that Steffan Wilson had been charged with attempted murder.

Handyman Mr George said he was satisfied with the court’s decision to find Tomos Wilson guilty of causing the wedding night fracas and let him off with a non-custodial sentence.

He said: ‘All we wanted as the truth to come out in court and that’s what happened.

‘It’s too early for Erin or any of us to talk about it, we had a tough day in court and now we need some time.’

The groom’s father Andrew Wilson was visibly upset after seeing his son convicted of the wedding day assault.

He said: ‘All I can tell you is that if the truth had come out he would have been exonerated.’

Brother Tomos was sentenced yesterday for drunkenly going on the rampage at Steffan’s wedding in July.

The fight broke out as the bride’s family tried to help the drunk groom up the stairs after his wedding.

Tomos started hurling abuse at the Mason-George family, the court heard.

He said his brother should never have married primary school teacher Ms Mason-George and said his brother was ‘no longer a Wilson’.

He was found guilty of five charges of assault as well as two charges of criminal damage.

District Judge Gwyn Jones said that while none of the Mason-George family suffered long-lasting injuries, the ‘thoughts and bad memories of what should have been a happy event will be there for some time’.

Prosecutor Kevin Challinor said on July 27, Wilson had reacted angrily when the family tried to get his brother Steffan Wilson to go to bed as he was drunk.

Ms Mason-George told the trial that things escalated when Wilson tried to throw punches at her.

He then grabbed his sister-in-law’s wedding dress and pulled it, causing her to fall down a flight of stairs.

Tomos, who denied all the charges, was also ordered to pay compensation of £250 each to Erin and Cally Mason-George, as well as £100 each to Dion and Linda Mason-George

Mr Challinor said that during the incident Wilson assaulted Ms Mason-George’s mother, Linda, and her younger sister Dion, and also grabbed Ms Mason-George’s other sister, Cally, by the neck, causing reddening.

Wilson also assaulted a manager at Lampeter’s Falcondale Hotel it is claimed and  was charged with damaging his shirt and fixtures and fittings at the venue.

During the trial, Wilson denied all the charges and defence solicitor Tom Roberts said the incident had been sparked by Ms Mason-George and her family.

He said Wilson had reacted after seeing Ms Mason-George first slap and swear at his brother, before seeing her and her family assisting Steffan Wilson up the stairs where he claimed Ms Mason-George had pushed him, causing him to fall.

Mr Roberts said both Ms Mason-George and her sister Cally had thrown punches at Wilson and that Ms Mason-George later threw a vase and glass bottle at him, which she denied.

Giving evidence on Tuesday morning, Harry Wilson, the other best man, said he saw Erin Mason-George ‘slap’ Steffan Wilson saying it was time for bed.

He described seeing Steffan fall down the stairs and his brother Tomos going to help him before Erin Mason-George threw punches at Tomos, which connected, while other members of her family ‘lunged’ at Steffan.

Harry said Tomos had not assaulted anybody and had got away from the area while he helped Steffan.

At Aberystwyth court yesterday, Wilson was made subject to a community order for 12-months and will have to carry out 240 hours of unpaid work.

He was also ordered to pay compensation of £250 each to Erin and Cally Mason-George, as well as £100 each to Dion and Linda Mason-George and Mr Jones.

Costs of £960 and a victim surcharge of £90 were also imposed.
