A man has been allegedly caught piloting a scissor lift on a night-time joyride through the streets of a major Australian city on two consecutive nights.

Footage on Thursday showed police stopping the lift in the middle of Shields Street in Cairns, far north Queensland before a man wearing boardshorts and a hi-vis shirt climbed down from the partly-extended picker.

‘I thought I’d seen pretty much everything,’ a police officer can be heard saying in the clip.

‘Where did you get that from?’ she asked the man.

‘It was just on the street ready to go,’ he replies.

The 31-year-old man was arrested after allegedly stealing the cherry picker from a construction site on the Esplanade before going for a spin down the main street.

The man was charged and released on bail – only to be found by officers on Friday morning allegedly piloting another cherry picker.

The second lift was allegedly stolen from a construction site on Shields Street and was being driven along Abbott Street in the Cairns CBD.

Officers allege on the second occasion the man refused to disembark the lift.

He was again arrested and hit with a total of three charges – drink driving, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, and obstructing police.

He is set to front Cairns Magistrates Court on April 23.
