Coles launches VERY controversial new hot cross buns: ‘Why can’t you leave them alone’

  • Coles customer furious following the launch of Vegemite hot cross buns
  • The savoury version was first launched for Easter 2022 with huge success
  • But some people missed it and were outraged when they saw it on the shelves

Hundreds of Coles shoppers have slammed the retailer’s seasonal hot cross bun launch once again – but this time it has nothing to do with the date they hit the shelves.

This time bun lovers are pleading with supermarkets to ‘stop bringing out new flavours’ after noticing a Vegemite and cheese option in the mix.

The uproar came after one furious shopper posted a picture on Facebook with: ‘I have no words’.

Coles relaunched their hot cross buns on December 27 this year but one of their flavours has created a stir

‘Why can’t things be left alone, fruit or plain not this crap,’ one angry woman wrote on the post.

‘Gross I hate vegemite tried it once never again,’ another said.

‘I seen them at Coles yesterday and my thoughts were (two vomit emojis),’ added another.

The Vegemite and cheese version of the iconic Easter staple went on sale on December 27, with the rest of the chain’s collection.

But it appeared to escape criticism until the new year.

Some people leapt to the defence of ‘creative licensing’ with hot cross bun flavours.

‘If people never changed and experimented with different food we’d never have hot cross buns in the first place. Or bread at all.

‘Or, indeed, anything that didn’t happen to just fall in our mouth from a tree. You don’t have to like new foods or even try them, but to declare their very existence being bad is just silly,’ one woman declared.

‘If you don’t like it don’t buy it. Not my cup of tea but I like variations they come up with,’ agreed another.

This is the second year the retailer has launched the Vegemite version, repeating the limited item because of its extreme popularity.

‘I tried them last year, and they were gross. I took a bite of one, and the rest went in the bin. That sweet salty combo does not work for me. They need to bring back the sticky date ones,’ one woman said.
