Coronavirus Australia: South Australia detects a sixth case as state is plunged into lockdown

South Australia detects a sixth case of coronavirus as the state suffers through Australia’s toughest-ever lockdown for the next week

South Australia has recorded a new case of coronavirus, taking the latest cluster to six.

The latest case was announced on Wednesday morning, 12 hours after the entire state was plunged into a week-long lockdown.

More than 35 venues across metropolitan Adelaide haven been listed as exposure sites with more likely in coming days.

They include major shopping centres and at least two schools along with banks, hardware stores, cafes and chemists.

South Australian Premier Steven Marshall said the state had to ‘go hard and go early’ to have any chance of containing the outbreak  of the highly contagious Delta variant of the disease.

‘We hate putting these restrictions in place but we have one chance to get this right,’ the premier said.

‘We are moving as quickly as we can to slow and stop the spread of this cluster.’

More to come.
