Could Jackie Weaver be heading for Strictly? Clerk who shot to viral fame during Handforth Parish Council row struggles to keep a straight face as she dodges questions about partnering with Anton Du Beke on BBC Breakfast

  • Jackie Weaver shot to fame after clips of parish council’s meeting went viral
  • Members lost their cool, traded insults and ultimately got booted off the call
  • She appeared on BBC Breakfast today and discussed meeting Anton Du Beke
  • Couldn’t keep a straight face when asked whether she will appear on Strictly

Viral sensation Jackie Weaver has hinted that she might be swapping her Zoom parish council meetings for the Strictly dancefloor today.

The clerk, from Handforth, became an overnight sensation earlier this year after millions of people were impressed by her calm handling of irate councillors on a video call.

Appearing on BBC Breakfast today, Jackie struggled to keep a straight face as she discussed working with Strictly Come Dancing star Anton Du Beck on a new podcast, before being pressed as to whether she would appear on the programme.

Jackie broke down in giggles and dodged the question completely, saying: ‘This is the month of politics. No politician gives a direct answer to the question.’

She appeared on the show to discuss her new agony aunt podcast, stating: ‘It’s a bit of light relief from elections.

‘It was something I’d never considered doing before. I’d never seen myself as particularly funny.’

She continued: ‘The podcast has allowed me to have wonderfully amazing conversations with people.

‘I’m so humbled by people like Anton Du Beke and Tom Allen who have come on to be partner agony aunts.’

She was then asked by presenter Dan Walker if Anton was her ‘ultimate hero’, but remained pointedly stumped by the question, bluntly saying: ‘Busted.’

Jackie said the podcast would ‘stay topical’ and focus on ‘important issues in life’, adding: ‘One question Anton and I agonized over is what is the best dance to outrun the zombie apocalypse. A difficult question but we had it.’

But when Dan questioned what they had concluded, she dodged answering again, saying: ‘I couldn’t possibly tell you that now could I?’

The host went on to ask: ‘You say you’ve discussed dancing with Anton, your Strictly hero…Might there be a possibility of the pair of you pairing up for this years series?’

However, earlier this year, Coral bookmakers backed internet star Jackie Weaver at 10-1 to appear.

‘Jackie Weaver has become an internet sensation overnight. She is now being backed to be on the Strictly dance floor later this year,’ said Coral’s John Hill.

Jackie made headlines earlier this year when a Handforth parish council Zoom meeting went viral, of which she was the chair.

No-nonsense Jackie was drafted in to oversee proceedings amid claims of bullish behaviour from some of the council members during meetings, and was met with vicious remarks and aggressive yelling as a result.

She wasted no time in deleting those responsible from the Zoom conference in the recorded meeting, which was leaked online and ended up gaining her hero status.
