A short-legged baby cat has sent the internet into a frenzy with its unique running style.

The three-month-old Munchkin cat, called Diu Diu, shot to fame after being filmed running in an awkward but cute manner.

The kitten’s owner, Ms Zhang, told MailOnline that Diu Diu was trying to get his favourite treat when she recorded the adorable scene at their own in Shandong Province, eastern China.

Ms Zhang, a piano teacher from the city of Jinan, said she had just opened a can of tuna when Diu Diu heard the sound and eagerly dashed towards her.

The clip, filmed on December 13, shows the determined pet trying hard to reach his dream snack by moving as quickly as possible.

The five-second video has amassed more than seven million clicks and 332,000 ‘likes’ since it was shared onto Douyin, the Chinese version of TikTok.

Ms Zhang said that she bought Diu Diu less than two months ago after coming across him in a pet store.

Munchkin cats are known for their extremely short legs and a long spine, leading them to resemble ferrets in movements.

Diu Diu has sparked a debate on Douyin, with users comparing his running style to that of a rabbit, a squirrel and deer Bambi.

One fan wrote on Douyin: ‘SO cute!’
