Dramatic dashcam video shows New Mexico police officer saving a choking 11-month-old baby’s life after racing through traffic and performing first aid on the side of a highway

  • New Mexico State Police officer Mario Herrera saved 11-month-old Elikai’s life in Espanola on February 2
  • Dashcam video showed him speeding through traffic after hearing a 911 call from the boy’s parents saying he was choking 
  • Herrera intercepted the parents as they were rushing towards the hospital 
  • The dashcam footage showed the officer jumping out of his car and quickly performing first aid on the boy 
  • After just a few seconds the little boy started breathing again and his parents were visibly relieved. 

A New Mexico police officer saved a choking 11-month-old baby’s life after racing through traffic and then administering first aid on the side of a highway. 

Dashcam video from State Police officer Mario Herrera’s vehicle showed him speeding through traffic in Espanola on February 2 after hearing the 911 call from the boy’s distraught parents. 

The parents started immediately driving towards the closest hospital after noticing their son, Elikai, was choking in his car seat.

Officer Herrera, who was close by when the frantic call came over his radio, rushed to try and intercept the parents en route to the ER. 

He signaled for them to pull over on the side of the highway. 

The dashcam footage showed the officer jumping out of his car and running towards the parents as they quickly removed their son from the car. 

The officer could be seen placing the little boy over his knee to administer first aid and dislodge whatever was caught in his throat. 

After just a few seconds of performing first aid, the little boy started breathing again and his parents were visibly relieved. The footage showed Elikai clinging to the officer (above) before he was passed back to his father

Elikai and his parents later reunited with the officer again after the little boy was fully recovered.
