Speaking to Zenit’s official website, Lovren said: I will tell you a short story. In 2017, on the first day of preseason training with Liverpool, one 18-year-old player, I will not name him, came to training in a Mercedes with a gold Rolex on his wrist.’

Lovren then recounted the conversation with Klopp saying: ‘What car did you come here in?’

‘A Mercedes,’ the youngster replied.

‘What’s that on your wrist?’ Klopp asked.

A Rolex.’

‘How many matches have you played for the first team?’ Klopp asked.

‘None,’ replied the teenager.

Lovren continued by joking: ‘Yeah, he came in with two gold watches! The next day he arrived without a watch and a normal car.’

Lovren left Liverpool after playing 15 times in all competitions for the club in the 2019-20 season.

The Croatia international, who joined from Southampton, won the Premier League and the Champions League at the club.
