Dina Asher-Smith withdraws from European Indoors due to a tight quad in Great Britain injury scare

Dina Asher-Smith withdraws from European Indoors due to a tight quad in another Great Britain injury scare leading up to Tokyo Olympics, with Katarina Johnson-Thompson unable to train due to an achilles problem

Dina Asher-Smith has ditched plans to run at the European Indoors next month because of an injury scare.

The 200m world champion had intended to contest the 60m at the championships in Poland but has pulled out of the remainder of the indoor season after reporting a tight quad earlier this month.

While her team insist the injury is no longer affecting her, it is nonetheless a disruption to the sprinter at the start of the Olympic season.

‘I was really excited but I have a tight quad so we thought it would be wise to sit this one out,’ Asher-Smith told the Telegraph.

It’s a blow for the 25-year-old who had been in excellent shape this indoor season so far – having won both her meets she contested in January.

The news follows Sportsmail’s revelation that fellow world champion Katarina Johnson-Thompson has been battling an achilles injury.

As revealed last month, one of Britain’s best gold medal hopes for Tokyo had been in a protective boot since a training accident at the end of last year. However, she is since out of it but will not be able to return to training until March.

Great Britain’s team for next month’s European Indoor Championships in Torun, Poland, will be announced on Monday.
