Dog behaviorist Will Atherton, from the UK, has racked up more than 881,000 followers on TikTok thanks to his insightful tips – and his latest advice has left social media stunned
In a recent video, the content creator revealed a list of the ‘worst’ mistakes people ‘accidentally’ make with their pet pups, saying: ‘The first one is leaving food down for your dog’
Will continued that the other thing pet owners are doing ‘is accidentally reinforcing separation anxiety’
In the clip, which has been viewed a staggering 6.5 million times, Will addresses the camera directly as he begins: ‘These are the worst things that you accidentally do with your dog every single day.
‘As a canine behaviorist, I specialize in when things go terribly wrong with dogs, which also means I see the reasons why those bad things happened.’
Launching into his list, the content creator explains: ‘The first one is leaving food down for your dog.’
According to Will, if you leave food out for your dog all day – rather than providing them with it at specific meal times – you are doing yourself a disservice, because your pet will not associate their happy feeding time with you.
‘Not only are you missing out on a massive opportunity to help train your dog, but you’re also missing out on a massive opportunity to build a relationship with your dog, where all the best things in life come through you,’ he explained.
Rather than leaving food out all day for your dog to graze, he suggests placing a bowl of food down only at specific feeding times.
‘Stop leaving food down for your dog to have access to whenever they want,’ he added.

Viewers were quick to flood the comments to praise Will for his insight as well as expressing their upset that they were at fault
He continues: ‘The next thing is accidentally reinforcing separation anxiety.’
Will notes that one of the biggest mistakes that dog owners can make is causing a big scene when they leave and return to their pup – explaining that this frenzy of excitement only reinforces their anxiety when you are away from them.
‘When you leave and when you return and leave your dog alone, go and come back quietly and calmly,’ he says.
‘Stop getting your dog so hyped up, telling them that everything’s going to be okay, and leave.
‘Stop getting hyped up and telling them how much you’ve missed them when you come home. You’re creating the separation anxiety.’
And viewers were quick to flood the comments to praise Will for his insights as well as expressing their own upset after realizing that they might be at fault.
One wrote: ‘Yes, I’m guilty of that… it’s my own separation anxiety, thank you! I will work on this.’
Another added: ‘I do love to see my dog get so excited to see me when I get home. So I am very guilty of the last one.’
And a third, referencing a Taylor Swift hit, said: ‘It’s me. Hi. I’m the problem, it’s me.’
