A British salesman who told officers ‘You don’t know who I am – I’ve got Dubai Police in my pocket’ when he was arrested for ‘causing chaos’ while drunk was today jailed for six months in the UAE.

The 42-year-old, who has not been named, was arrested with a Vietnamese woman, 29, after they caused a disturbance in the Al Raffa area at 3.30am on March 22.

A police officer told Dubai Criminal Court: ‘They were causing chaos and staggering while the male accused was harassing passers-by.’

He said he told them to get a taxi but they refused and the man started screaming at him: ‘I am British. Look what will happen to you. You don’t know who I am. One call and you will see what would happen. Dubai Police is in my pocket.’

When the officer arrested him, the salesman resisted and started shoving and kicking him. The woman also punched the officer and hit him with her handbag.

A second officer said in court documents: ‘We called for a female patrol car which arrived and arrested the woman.’

Both defendants denied charges of consuming alcohol without a licence, assaulting and threatening officers and claimed they were too drunk to recall what happened.

They were both jailed for six months and will be deported after their release.
