Dwight Yorke believes that Edinson Cavani‘s new contract at Manchester United could prove a stumbling block to the Red Devils’ hopes of winning the Premier League title next season.
Cavani, 34, committed his future to Old Trafford this week, having hinted at an exit in the summer with the Uruguayan yearning for a return to South America.
The former PSG marksman’s impact has been hailed by the likes of Gary Neville, who believes that United will not enter the race for Erling Haaland or Harry Kane as a result of Cavani’s performances for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.

However, former United striker Yorke claims that Cavani’s commitment to United may ‘hamper’ the club’s tilt at the league title next season, having failed to be crowned English champions in eight years.
‘I dont think a lot of people expected Cavani to do as well as he has done, and I think Man United and Ole are delighted with what he’s contributed so far,’ Yorke told talkSPORT.
‘When you do well you should be rewarded, and he’s been rewarded with this new contract.

‘But my problem with it is, does it really hamper bringing in a younger version of a No.9?
‘It’s paramount we win the Premier League title next season, and is Cavani really going to take us over the line? That’s probably the one stumbling block.’
Yorke added that former team-mate Solskjaer has impressed in the United hot seat, but the expectation for next season will be to get the club ‘over the line’ and wrestle the title off local rivals Manchester City.

‘Ole has been in that job for three years, he’s really cemented himself in that manager role now, he’s got the lads playing how Manchester United play, he’s got us to four semi-finals and now a final, so can he get us over the line and really step up? That’s the challenge he’s got,’ he added.
‘I hope the Cavani signing, although he’s been great for us, doesn’t hamper us getting in the players we need.

‘I think we need another two players to really get us over the line in terms of challenging for the Premier League title next season.’
United are reportedly lining up another swoop for Jadon Sancho, having missed out on the Borussia Dortmund star during a prolonged transfer saga last summer.
Mason Greenwood has thrived in the right of a front three, but United view the talented hotshot as a centre forward and Sancho’s arrival could see the youngster shifted into a central role.
