Amused parents are getting creative with elaborate Elf on the Shelf pranks as the countdown to Christmas gets underway.

Cheeky mums and dads from around Australia have been sharing pictures on social media of the festive elves getting up to all sorts of serious mischief.

With much of the world in lockdown amid the coronavirus pandemic, many are getting into the 2020 spirit by placing dolls in ‘hotel quarantine’.

Unsuspecting kids are finding the Christmas elves locked in glass jars, with a note that reads: ‘Under quarantine for 14 days, Santa’s orders’ – a clever tactic many parents are opting for so they don’t have to worry about moving them every day.

‘We were smart… don’t have to move him for 14 days. Covid is the perfect reason,’ one mother wrote in a Facebook group.

Another mother who jokingly called herself ‘lazy’ also used Covid as an excuse to keep the elves in quarantine for two weeks.

She had penned a letter to her kids on behalf of the elves, saying: ‘We were heading back from the North Pole last night and were stopped by border patrol.

‘Apparently we have to do 14 days in hotel quarantine due to all this Covid business. At least the beds are comfy and the bath is huge.

‘We are counting down the days in quarantine… 13 to go! Can’t wait to see you.’

The letter was accompanied with two photographs of the elves enjoying their time inside a hotel room, with one pictured taking a relaxing bath.

‘Our elf showed up overnight. Certified Covid-free but came to swab our horse… Silly elf,’ one mother wrote.

Meanwhile, dozens of parents are getting creative with elaborate pranks around their homes, including elves making a mess in the kitchen, or writing cheeky messages or drawings on items such as toilet papers and bananas.
