Eton Farm in Mackay discovers double shelled egg in rare phenomenon

It’s egg-ception! Bizarre moment a farmer finds an egg inside another egg because it wouldn’t fit inside a normal box

A farmer has made a bizarre discovery after cracking open a chicken egg and finding another one inside of it.

Deb McLucas had set aside the particularly large egg while sorting through her collection at her family farm in the Mackay region, in north Queensland.

The farmer told Daily Mail Australia the egg would not fit into the packing box and its large size piqued her curiosity.

‘Twice a week we grade and pack our eggs,’ she said. ‘We grade around 10,000 eggs each week.

‘On this particular day one of our team kept the egg aside because it was way too big to go through the system,’ she said.

Ms McLucas filmed the egg being cracked in the egg sorting factory.

‘We suspected it would be a double yoker, which we commonly get from new hens when they’re starting to lay,’ she said.

Footage shows the egg being cracked over a plastic red bowl before it is gently pulled apart.

A smaller egg drops out of it with a surprised Ms McLucas saying: ‘An egg in an egg.’

Ms McLucas said it is only the second time she has come across a double shelled egg in her six years on the farm.

Though she provided a very reasonable explanation for the bizarre occurrence.

She had recently increased her farm by 1,000 young laying hens.

The farmer explained the young hens were still getting into the rhythm of laying eggs.

‘Their hormonal systems aren’t quite in sync and they’re still getting the hang of producing the egg and knowing exactly when to put that shell around.

‘It’s like some of the coins that are made at the mint and come out a bit different from the rest.’

Footage of the extraordinary find has been uploaded to Facebook and sent social media users into a meltdown.

‘Truly… I have never seen that?’ one person commented.

Another one said: ‘Chooks are amazing!’
