It was a perfect choice by UEFA to select Spanish referee Antonio Mateu Lahoz for this match, along with his compatriots Pau Cebrian Devis and Roberto del Palomar as assistants.

This is the same refereeing team that took charge of last month’s 2021 Champions League final between Chelsea and Manchester City.

Mateu Lahoz was also fourth official for the 2019 Champions League final between Liverpool and Tottenham.

He knows what the English game is like, and there will be no shortage of Premier League players on show between England and Scotland on Friday night.

That understanding can only benefit the spectacle. The 44-year-old former P.E. teacher is very much a players’ referee. He’ll happily speak to them, and he’ll bring his personality to the pitch.

Speaking recently, Mateu Lahoz said he likes to make the players feel ‘relaxed’ around him and as if they can communicate together.

He’s one of Spain’s top officials and more than capable of handling this momentous clash between England and Scotland.
