Former Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher has praised Bruno Fernandes‘ belief after the Portuguese missed a second straight penalty before firing the club ahead against Paris Saint-Germain.
Fernandes’ first spot kick was saved by PSG keeper Keylor Navas down to his left after Anthony Martial had been fouled by Abdou Diallo.
But referee Antonio Lahoz ordered the penalty to be re-taken after Navas was adjudged to have come off his line too soon, and the Portugal international made no mistake to send the Costa Rican the wrong way and give the Reds the lead.

And speaking to BT Sport at half-time, Fletcher compared Fernandes’ self-belief to that of former United stars Eric Cantona and Cristiano Ronaldo to put a second penalty miss behind him after failing to score from the spot at Newcastle and put United ahead.
‘It is not a great penalty the first one, it goes too close to the goalkeeper, he goes back to his hop, skip and jump, but credit to him,’ Fletcher said.
‘He’s the captain, and that could easily be a Eric Cantona or Cristiano Ronaldo, somebody having that belief in themselves that they missed a penalty at the weekend and missed a penalty there.

‘But there was only one person taking that penalty there and that was Bruno Fernandes.’
The goal was Fernandes’ fourth goal already this season, having already netted penalties against Brighton and Tottenham before he netted from open play at St James’ Park at the weekend.
The 26-year-old is also captaining Ole Gunnar Soslkjaer’s men against the Ligue 1 champions in the absence of centre-back Harry Maguire.
And ahead of the game, Fernandes admitted United’s start to the season has not been good enough and said the collective was to blame.
