A rescue greyhound named Sally was dragged to safety on top of a blow up pool toy after she was caught in raging flood waters in Brisbane.

Heartwarming footage shows Sally’s owner Malcolm Meiers pulling the dog to dry land after he was forced to say goodbye to his house.

Standing shirtless in chest-high waters, Mr Meiers carefully guided Sally through the murky brown waters before racing back to his home in Windsor to grab what he could and flee on a bodyboard.

His wife Kate Christensen, who was visiting her parents with their baby in the Sunshine Coast at the time, said both her husband and their dog were not great with the water.

‘I knew it would have taken a lot for him to do that,’ she told

‘That’s why I was so proud of him for all the efforts he tried to do to save our house while he was there alone and his bravery to get into the water.’

Their home was destroyed by floods on Sunday, along with countless other houses in Brisbane.

They’ve estimated that they lost 80 per cent of their belongings which included a $20,000 collection of cook books.

Mr Meiers and Ms Christensen, both aged 35, were unable to secure contents insurance.

The pair are now staying somewhere temporarily as they like many other Aussies this week try to rebuild their lives.

A GoFundMe has been set up to help the family recover.
