Australians in need of a break could more than double the length of their upcoming holidays without draining their annual leave balance.
There’s an easy hack hardworking Aussies can use to maximise their vacations, it simply requires paying close attention to when public holidays land.
The hack starts tomorrow, as Australia Day is on Wednesday next week.
That means a canny worker could take nine straight days off – from the 22nd to the 30th of January while only using up four days of annual leave.

The Today Show’s finance expert Effie Zahos shared other key dates that also allowed extended breaks.
‘It’s the old trick of adding your annual leave to public holidays…if you target the main holidays you can actually double it,’ she told Today on Friday.
Employees can take a whopping 17 day break between the 15th of April to May 1st using only eight days of leave by taking advantage of Easter and Anzac Day.
Because the remaining days are either public holidays or weekends, you will max out your leave time while barely making a dent in your annual allowance.
A four day break is up for grabs for the following week in NSW if leave is booked on the Queen’s birthday which falls on Monday June 13.

However, Western Australians will have to wait until September 26th to bank their leave and Queenslanders until October 3.
While public holidays will be sparse over winter, Aussies will be able to enjoy a nine day break for four days of leave as the weather begins to warm in spring.
Workers in ACT, NSW and SA won’t need to bank any leave to score themselves a three-day break with Labour Day falling on Monday October 3 out of the weekend.
Christmas and New Years Day will again fall over the weekend in 2022 and 2023, giving Aussies additional public holidays on December 27 and January 2.
