Roy Keane was mocked by Ian Wright for wearing what looked like a captain’s armband on his jumper during ITV’s coverage of France‘s 1-0 win over Germany on Tuesday night.

The former Manchester United and Republic of Ireland midfielder wore a jumper with several bands on the left sleeve.

As a result, he became the subject of Wright’s joke shortly after presenter Mark Pougatch referred to Wales needing their captain for tomorrow’s game against Turkey.

Having analysed Les Bleus in depth, Pougatch went on to introduce a new segment on the show by saying: ‘Wales need their captain… the man who wears the armband.’

Wright was quick to respond saying: ‘Like Roy is, look, he has to keep his armband on his jumper.’

Wright, Pougatch and Patrick Vieira all erupted into laughter before the former Arsenal player added: ‘I like it, though, I like it.’

Pougatch added: ‘Two captains, one armband’, before Wright finished the joke off by saying: ‘He’s letting us know he’s a captain.’

Keane did not offer a response but couldn’t help but smile at his fellow pundits comments.

Despite mocking Keane for wearing what looked like an armband while covering Euro 2020 as a pundit, the former United player was in fact one of most successful captain’s in the Red Devils history.

The former midfielder became one of the most decorated players in Premier League history and led United to nine major honours.

He collected seven Premier League titles, four FA Cups, four Community Shields, one Champions League and an Intercontinental Cup during his time at United.

The Irishman was also a dominant figure during United’s golden era under Sir Alex Ferguson, lifting numerous trophies as club caption across his 12-year spell between 1993 and 2005.

Keane, who made 366 Premier League appearances, scoring 39 times and registering 33 assists, is also widely regarded as one of the best central midfield players of his time and had a reputation for being a no-nonsense hardman.

As a result of his achievements, Keane became the fourth player to be inducted into the Premier League Hall of Fame last month.
