Idris Elba transformed into character in brand new snaps from his upcoming film Luther, in which he portrays the eponymous leading man.

The actor, 50, was snapped in his character’s signature tweed coat ensemble for the movie, which has swapped it’s typical London set for a new location.

Following it’s filming earlier this year, the psychological crime thriller movie is based on the BBC series of the same name – and will be released in early 2023 on Netflix.

The snaps, obtained by Empire Magazine, showed Idris looking suave in a tweed, longline coat, which his character, DCI John Luther, famously dons in the BBC series.

One picture gave a glimpse at the film’s new unique location as the actor made his way through a snowy, mountainous landscape.

Sharing how the franchise has made the move from television to film, the screen star told Empire: ‘It’s really dangerous when expanding from television to film to throw a lot of money at it, and for that moment to change the characteristics of the show.

‘I wanted to make sure that even though we had a bigger budget, we didn’t distort the parameters of Luther-land too much.’

And while he didn’t give away where the movie will be set, Idris did explain that the new release has ‘broken out’ of London.

‘We break out of the gritty streets of London, we take it outside of that a little bit,’ he shared.

The main character also serves as a producer on the film, which was directed by Jamie Payne and written by Neil Cross, and will also star the likes of Andy Serkis and Cynthia Erivo.

TV series Luther began it’s first series in 2010, before ending with it’s fifth season nine years later.

It comes after Idris shared that he wrapped up filming for the film earlier this year, telling LADbible: ‘The Luther film, guess what, we have finished it and we have some finishing work to do on the movie but it’s nearly there.’

‘We’re really proud of it.’

He added about the franchise: ‘We’re opening the doors and widening it so anything’s possible when you can do that.’
