From $1 hotdogs to plant-based meatballs: IKEA to unveil a brand new menu in stores across Australia

IKEA Australia is set to unveil a new menu with plant-based versions of its famous Swedish meatballs, hotdogs and ice cream.
The flat-pack furniture giant said the company will serve up vegan and vegetarian meals to cater for the growing meat alternative market.
On Friday, the Swedish chain announced at a Future of Food panel event that a series of meat substitutes will be launched at IKEA stores across the country.
The new menu, set to roll out from January 2020, will include plant-based protein meat balls, veggie hotdogs and vegetable-based soft serve ice creams.

The chain will also be introducing a plant-based, children’s menu globally, so that every child who visits the restaurant can have healthy options to choose from.
The veggie buffet, which includes vegetarian breakfast, veggie balls and wraps, is currently being offered at the Tempe’s store in Sydney’s inner west – and has already proven popular among customers.
‘At IKEA we are in a position to challenge not only ourselves but the wider industry,’ IKEA’s country food manager Ivana Frost said.
‘We will challenge our contractors and suppliers to be better, to be more innovative in the ways they package and transport.
‘As a company that feeds 13 million Australians a year, we can say to suppliers that we preference partners that are exploring innovations like plant-based packaging and actively reducing waste in a value chain.’

IKEA has also revealed its seven food principals on how they want to be a destination for food that is trusted, affordable, healthy and sustainable, living by the philosophy ‘lagom’, which is the Swedish word for ‘just right’

For plant-based meals, the company aims to create ‘less meat and more plant-based foods such as fruit, vegetables, wholegrains, legumes, nuts and seeds.
‘Celebrating the use of seasonal and diverse ingredients.’
By 2030, the furniture brand hopes to inspire and enable more than one billion people to live a better everyday life within the limits of the planet.
‘We will help to create a circular food system that positively impacts people, animals and the environments connected to it,’ it said.
