Irish actress Aisling Bea issues riposte to critics of her English accent in Home Alone remake

Irish star Aisling Bea, who stars in the much-anticipated remake of cult holiday film Home Alone, has vented her frustration on social media after some fans didn’t like her English accent.

The 37-year-old plays Carol in Home Sweet Home Alone, mother to 10-year-old Max (Archie Yates), who, like Kevin McCallister in the original, gets left to his own devices when his parents forget to take him on holiday.

However, when the film’s trailer was released yesterday, Bea’s attempt at an English accent sparked a flurry of tweets – with many apparently disconcerted that she’d ditched her usual Irish lilt in favour of a English accent.

The trailer for Home Sweet Home Alone, the remake of 1990 classic, was released yesterday and offered a first glimpse of Aisling Bea playing Carol, mother to 10-year-old Max, who gets left behind as his family head to Tokyo – but some were bemused by the Irish actor’s accent

@benallenwf snarked: ‘Aisling Bea with an English accent… I’m reporting this for offensive content.’

@Pesopesopeso4 added: ‘Love Aisling but dear lord she should have passed on this one. I mean, did she get lessons from dick van dyke?!’

@carrielamarr penned: ‘For the love of Jesus, why couldn’t they have Aisling Bea use her own accent, which is sublime?’

@AaronFlattery added: ‘Can’t explain how uncomfortable Aisling Bea doing an English accent has made me.’

Bea, clearly frustrated with the avalanche of tweets, took to social media last night to explain exactly why she couldn’t use her own intonation – and showed off a few other accents while she was there too, dipping into Texan, Scottish and Australian.

She said: ‘To everybody who has been wondering online why I have an English accent in the new Home Alone movie, it’s because… the character’s English.
