Joachim Low given vote of confidence by German FA president and will continue until Euro 2020 next year despite ‘shame of Seville’ as his team were thrashed 6-0 by Spain in heaviest defeat in almost 90 years

  • Joachim Low is under severe pressure after Germany’s 6-0 pasting by Spain
  • But the coach has been given the backing of DFB president Fritz Keller
  • Keller released a statement that insisted lessons would be learned from the loss
  • It didn’t mention Low by name but said the team would push on to Euro 2020

Joachim Low will remain Germany‘s manager until Euro 2020 at least despite Tuesday night’s humiliating 6-0 defeat by Spain.

It was the team’s heaviest defeat in almost 90 years but under-pressure Low has received the vote of confidence from German Football Association president Fritz Keller.

Low has come in for the sharpest criticism of his 14 years in charge of the German team following the UEFA Nations League embarrassment in Seville.

But in a statement released by the DFB on Wednesday afternoon, which didn’t mention Low by name, Keller spoke of the hurt suffered by the team and their resolve to recover in time for next summer’s European Championship.

He said: ‘We had a black evening in Seville yesterday that hurt. The spectators at home, me, the coach, the players. I was in the dressing room after the final whistle and I felt everyone’s extreme disappointment. But also the will to correct this situation.

‘Our young team can grow from this setback if this game, in which not only heart and passion were missing, is carefully analysed and the necessary conclusions are drawn. It has potential.

‘We made the conscious decision to make the change with many new and young players with perspective. This path, as you saw yesterday, can be rocky and also lead to painful defeats.

‘Even if everyone would have wished a different way out of this difficult but up until then still successful international match year, our challenge continues to be to form a strong team for the next three major tournaments: the European Championship next year, the 2022 World Cup and the European Championship in our own country in 2024.’

It came after national team director Oliver Bierhoff insisted straight after the final whistle in Spain that Low, 60, retains the ‘complete trust’ of the FA.

Low’s contract extends into 2022 but Sport1 in Germany reported there is a high chance he will step down after next year’s Euros.

He faced criticism from all angles after what was described in the German press as ‘the shame of Seville’.

Former Germany international Lothar Matthaus branded the defeat a ‘total failure’ in the newspaper Bild and called for the reinstatement of Jerome Boateng, Thomas Muller and Mats Hummels, the three high-profile players Low axed after the 2018 World Cup, into the side.

‘I have never seen such a total failure!’ Matthaus said. ‘The discussion about Hummels and Boateng will continue. You need these leaders after such a defeat. In terms of team leadership, Muller will be mentioned.

‘For me the best have to play. But if Low would bring them back, he would have to give them full responsibility. Low doesn’t even have to do an error analysis [on the defeat]. The video session would last eight hours!’
