Royal Mail will hire 13,000 more temporary workers than normal for the Christmas shopping boom. 

The FTSE250 business will take on two-thirds more posties and sorters in addition to the 20,000 employed in a normal year.

Retail analysts believe 2020 will be the first Christmas where more than 50 per cent of shopping is online – up from 31 per cent last year, and the £1.5billion firm is preparing for a flood of parcels. 

Executive chairman Keith Williams told The Sunday Times: ‘It’s a big logistical challenge.’ 

Retail sales rose in September for the fifth month, and are 5.5 per cent higher than before the pandemic.
