Nicole Kidman reveals her husband Keith Urban found the Lucille Ball voice she used for her upcoming movie Being the Ricardos was ‘scary’


She is getting plenty of Oscar buzz for her role as famed Hollywood actress Lucille Ball in the upcoming Amazon Studios film Being the Ricardos.

But Nicole Kidman has confessed that mastering the I Love Lucy star’s voice became a ‘terrifying’ process that even scared her husband Keith Urban.

‘Vocally, I started with the Lucy voice, and it was so far out of reach that it was terrifying,’ the Australian actress told the New York Post.

‘I was, like, ‘Oh my gosh’. And I’d do it for my husband, who has a great ear, cause he’s a musician, and he’d be, like, ‘Hmmm’. Kinda scary.’ 

Kidman also revealed that she had second thoughts about playing Lucille Ball as she wasn’t sure she was up to the task of portraying the beloved Hollywood icon. 

‘I actually sent Aaron (Sorkin – the director) an e-mail saying, “I think I’m actually the wrong person now. I know I said ‘yes,’ but I’m now saying no”,’ the Oscar winner said.

The Pretty Little Lies star recalled how Sorkin immediately told her that she doesn’t “get to say no now!” after already accepting the role.

Nicole now admits she was ‘really glad’ he pushed her to play Lucille. 

Being the Ricardos will mainly focus on Lucille Ball’s relationship with Cuban-American actor Desi Arnaz.

Fellow Oscar winner Javier Bardem will play Arnaz.

Other stars appearing in the movie include J.K. Simmons, Nina Arianda, Tony Hale, Alia Shawkat and Clark Gregg.

Being the Ricardos is written and directed by Aaron Sorkin, who previously helmed Molly’s Game and The Trail of the Chicago 7.      

 Being the Ricardos premieres on Amazon Prime Video on December 21
