Kevin De Bruyne will NOT need surgery on double face fracture suffered in Champions League final

Kevin De Bruyne will NOT require surgery on double face fracture suffered in Champions League final… but Belgium boss Roberto Martinez is still sweating on Man City star’s availability for Euro 2020

Kevin De Bruyne will not have to undergo surgery despite suffering a fractured nose and eye socket in Manchester City‘s Champions League final defeat by Chelsea.

The 29-year-old City star left the Estadio do Dragao in Porto in tears after suffering a double face fracture following a clash with Blues defender Antonio Rudiger

He then revealed the extent of his injuries on Twitter on Sunday after leaving the pitch concussed and needing ice on his eye, but Belgium boss Roberto Martinez has confirmed he will not be required to go under the knife for further treatment.

The Spaniard however has still been left sweating over the midfielder’s ability for the start of their Euro 2020 this summer.

And the former Everton manager admitted he won’t know if De Bruyne will be able to feature in Belgium’s opening game against Russia on 12 June.

‘Kevin had a different programme to the rest of the players,’ Spaniard Martinez said.

‘He was only going to join us seven days later because he was playing in the Champions League final. But that programme has obviously been changed, he won’t be able to relax and rest just yet.

‘We’ve got to be very cautious, and we will get more clarity in the next few days, but I’ve spoken to Kevin and he was quite positive. We are very fortunate that even though he has a double fracture, he doesn’t need surgery.

‘An operation would have made it impossible for him to play in the European Championship. We don’t know if we can use him in the first game. I cannot give an answer because I don’t have any medical facts right now.

‘We are still assessing the injury and over the next four to five days we expect clarity.’ Then we will know what the next steps for Kevin will be.’

Martinez also blasted Germany centre-back Rudiger as ‘reckless’ and insisted he should have seen red in Porto.

‘For me, Rudiger is very, very fortunate. When you look at the replay, there’s no clash of heads,’ Martinez continued.

‘He’s properly leaving the shoulder against Kevin. He seems concussed and we will see the state of that. But that leaves a sour taste, because Rudiger’s holding his head, it’s almost that he wants to show that he’s hiding something.

‘For me, it was excessive force and it was reckless. And it should have been a red card. Kevin is not a player that goes down for no reason. You can see the pain and it’s a swollen eye.’

Belgium face both Russia and Finland in St Petersburg nine days apart, with their other Group B fixture against Denmark taking place in Copenhagen on 17 June.
