The Scottish left-back, in action for his country against England on Friday night, has been a shining light for the Gunners since joining for £25million from Celtic in 2019.

The club are optimistic that negotiations will conclude in the coming days and the deal will be signed off.

Arsenal recognise the importance of this summer in building a team to compete for the top four after a dire last season.

The gap between the north London club and their rivals appears to be widening so ensuring top talents like Tierney remain as key building blocks for the future is crucial.

Tierney made 27 appearances for Arsenal last season and technical director Edu is in talks with the Scot’s representatives.

Arteta has even talked up the defender’s chances of one day being club captain, previously saying: ‘I think he can be Arsenal captain as he has the respect and admiration of every member of the staff and every player.

‘It is just the way he is. He does it in a natural way. He is a really shy boy as well but he represents all of us in the club; all of the values that we want to instill and are in the DNA in this club.’

Arsenal are looking to make significant changes to the squad this summer and Granit Xhaka is likely to leave along with Konstantinos Mavropanos and Matteo Guendouzi.

They are also keen to tie down Emile Smith-Rowe to a new contract to ward off interest from Aston Villa.
