Kieran Trippier calls for England to keep ‘calm’ after disappointing Scotland stalemate

‘It’s all about being patient and calm… It’s about taking each step at a time’: Kieran Trippier calls for England to stay relaxed despite disappointing Scotland stalemate

  • England drew 0-0 with Scotland at Wembley Stadium on Friday evening
  • The atmosphere inside the ground on turned sour as the game went on
  • The Three Lions still remain on course to qualify for the round of 16

Kieran Trippier has called for patience and calm as England attempt to move forward after the players were booed off against Scotland.

The atmosphere inside Wembley turned sour on Friday night as frustrations boiled over following a 0-0 draw.

The reaction, which carried venom, was surprising considering England remain on course to qualify for the last 16.

England full-back Kieran Trippier has called for patience and calm from his team

Head coach Gareth Southgate was so alarmed by what he heard that he made a point of asking the crowd not to turn on his young players. But Trippier, one of the squad’s veterans at 30, was not flustered on Sunday as he dealt with the subject.

The Atletico Madrid full back recognised the onus is on the squad to raise their standards. He is well aware, however, that the mood inside Wembley against Czech Republic on Tuesday will be febrile if things are not going as England hope — which is why he has made it clear there must be cool heads for the team to progress.

‘We know the ability we have got and we know how well we can do as a team,’ said Trippier, who is pushing to be recalled after losing his place at left back to Luke Shaw for the Scotland game.

‘It’s all about being patient and calm. We have got four points from two games. It’s about taking each step at a time.

‘We know we can give a lot more and we will show that. We just need to keep working hard on the training field and listening to what the manager says. We are in a good place and the focus is on Tuesday.

‘We tried to win the game against Scotland. We understand the frustration because we know we can do better. We are looking forward to the game on Tuesday. It was a good learning curve for us.’

The former Tottenham man is adamant that the negative reaction was not discussed in the dressing room afterwards, nor does he believe it will have an adverse effect on those who were experiencing that level of hostility for the first time in their international careers.

‘The most important thing is to regroup and keep calm — as we all are,’ said Trippier (right). ‘Two clean sheets, four points on the board, another big game Tuesday. We know we can do better but we are still in a good position.

‘The atmosphere was not flat. Everybody’s calm; everybody’s relaxed.’
