Lionel Messi and Cesc Fabregas’ wives  have ‘convinced’ the pair to play in America together

Lionel Messi and Cesc Fabregas’ wives have ‘convinced’ the pair to play in America together as former Barcelona team-mates could be reunited in MLS

  • Barcelona star Lionel Messi will currently be a free agent once this seasons ends
  • Cesc Fabregas has just over a year left on his current contract at Monaco
  • The pair enjoyed three successful seasons together at Barcelona (2011-14)

It’s no secret that Cesc Fabregas and Lionel Messi are extremely close friends and according to reports the former Barcelona team-mates could be reunited in America.

Spanish journalist Guillem Balague claims that the pair are hoping to play alongside each other in Major League Soccer – a switch that is being endorsed by both wives.

‘Cesc Fabregas wants to go to the MLS,’ Balague told Champions League on CBS Sports on Wednesday night.

‘Cesc Fabregas’ wife and Messi’s wife are very good friends and they both, the wives, have convinced Cesc and Messi to go to America together.

‘When that will happen we don’t know yet because of course Cesc is still at Monaco. But it is something that is in the back of the mind of both players.’

Messi’s future at Barcelona looks fraught with the club’s greatest-ever player likely to leave at the end of the season as a free agent after being denied an exit last summer – a decision he publicly expressed his displeasure at.

The forward will not be short of suitors with Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain, who knocked Barcelona out of the Champions League last-16 on Wednesday, interested.

Earlier this month, Inter Miami co-owner David Beckham spoke of his desire to bring Messi to MLS in future too.

Fabregas’ future looks more secure at Monaco, with the midfield maestro’s contract at the French outfit not expiring until next summer.

Messi and Fabregas, both 33, have known each other since they were boys at Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy. Messi’s wife Antonela Roccuzzo and Fabregas’ Daniella Semaan are extremely close and reportedly would love their other halves to be linking up on a pitch Stateside soon.

During their three seasons together at Barca (2011-14), Fabregas and Messi won four major trophies together – including the 2012-13 LaLiga title.
