Lyft launches a new car rental service for residents in San Francisco and Los Angeles, which will give customers complimentary rides to and from pickup location

Today, Lyft announced a new car rental service for select users in San Francisco and Los Angeles.

By tapping the new key icon at the bottom of the app’s home screen, users will be able to pull up the rental interface and see a list of car models and rates.

After picking a car, users will be eligible for a free ride from a Lyft driver (up to a $20 value) to the rental location.

Lyft will also offer a free ride home from the drop off location, for a value of up to $20.

The service will give users unlimited miles and will charge market rates for gas in cases where rental cars aren’t returned with a full tank.

Users can choose free add-ons, including ski racks, car seats, and tire chains for travel in snowy areas.

The current selection of cars are limited to the Volkswagen Passat sedan and Volkswagen Atlas SUV in San Francisco.

In Los Angeles, users will be able to choose between the Mazda 3 sedan and Mazda CX-5 SUV.

The company promises it will soon add an option for hybrid cars in both cities.

Lyft is offering a discount program for people who rent on weekdays between Monday and Thursday.

Lyft’s pickup locations will be staffed by a company concierge to help users access their cars. 

HOW DOES LYFT’S CAR RENTAL SERVICE WORK?

Lyft users in Los Angeles and San Francisco can rent cars through the ride sharing app.

The rental option is available by tapping the key icon at the bottom of the app’s home screen.

Users as young as 22 can rent. 

Lyft will give renters a free ride to and from the rental locations for a value of up to $20 each way. 

San Francisco residents will he able to rent Volkswagen Passat or an Atlas.

Los Angeles residents can choose between a  Mazda 3 and CX-5. 

The service will allow users as young as 22 years old to rent cars, three years younger than the 25-year-old threshold at traditional car rental agencies.

Though prices are subject to change, the current price for the Passat sedan in San Francisco is as low as $35, according to a report from The Verge.

Lyft will also offer several tiers of insurance for renters, including coverage for personal injury and personal property damage, another that covers damage to the car, and a third option will cover damage to third parties for up to $1million.

The current insurance rates for standard coverage for damages to the rental car are $16 for the sedan and $25 for the SUV.

Lyft’s rental services is available now in Los Angeles and San Francisco.
