Man falls from unit balcony in Coconut Grove, Darwin after alleged fight with another man

Suspicious circumstances as a man plunges from the balcony of his apartment building and suffers possible spinal injuries

  • The man was flown to Royal Adelaide Hospital for treatment over the weekend 
  • Witnesses said they saw two men fighting before man plunged to the ground 

A man has suffered possible spinal injuries after falling from an apartment building balcony after an alleged fight with another man. 

The 47-year-old man was rushed to a Darwin hospital for surgery before he was then flown onto Royal Adelaide Hospital for further treatment. 

Witnesses told police, who were called to the building at Coconut Grove in Darwin’s west about 5pm Saturday, there was an alleged altercation between two men before they saw the man plunge from the second storey unit’s balcony.

‘There’s been an (alleged) altercation with another male – a fight between two persons in a room,’ NT Police Senior Sergeant Meacham King said, reports the NT News.

‘An edged weapon was (allegedly) produced. As a result a male has fallen from the balcony and landed on the ground.’

‘Investigations are continuing as to whether he fell or whether he was thrown.’

The man who fell is being treated for leg, lower abdomen, and possible spinal injuries 

A 27-year-old man known to the victim was arrested by police when he returned to the unit block about 8.30pm on Saturday.

He appeared in Darwin Local Court on Monday charged with assault.

Police are asking for anyone who could have information on the incident to contact them.
