  • The club consider the 22-year-old as an alternative option to Jadon Sancho
  • Barnes has scored five goals in all competitions for the Foxes this season

Manchester United are tracking the progress of Leicester winger Harvey Barnes with the hope he could be a potential transfer alternative to Jadon Sancho, according to reports.

United failed to agree a deal for Sancho in the summer with Borussia Dortmund refusing to lower their £100million asking price and the Germans remain determined to hold on their star.

But according to The Sun, United have started looking at other options and have been paying close attention to Barnes, who has had an impressive start to the season with the Foxes.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is said to be a fan of the 22-year-old and is keeping tabs on his progress.

United revealed they will back Solskjaer in the transfer market with executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward insisting the club have improved under the Norwegian.

‘I said in April we remained committed to strengthening the squad, while being disciplined in our spending during the pandemic,’ Woodward told a fans’ forum last month.

‘I believe we’ve delivered on that, with the additions we made during the summer taking our total net spending to over €200m (£180m) since summer 2019 – more than any other major European club over that period.

‘We will continue to support Ole with a planned, long-term approach to recruitment, focused on the summer windows.’

Barnes has five goals in all competitions this season and one assist. In the 2019-2020 campaign he managed seven goals and nine assists.

The report claims the Foxes value the winger at £60m but would not accept any bids put forward in the January transfer window.

Barnes has become a key player for Leicester since he was recalled from a loan spell with West Brom in January 2019.

He now has 65 league appearances for the club and also made his England debut in a friendly against Wales in October.

In September, Brendan Rodgers backed youngster to stake a claim for Gareth Southgate’s Euros squad next summer.

‘For him it’s about increasing his numbers, if he can get into double figures this year and makes a number of assists then he can be knocking on the door. He is a really gifted player.

‘Now it’s the case of improving and my job to challenge him even more. He is a great boy.
