Marcus Trescothick appointed England’s batting coach on full-time basis after several temporary stints in the job as Jon Lewis and Jeetan Patel come in as bowling coaches

  • Former England opener Trescothick, 45, will take on batting coach job full-time
  • He has fulfilled the role in a temporary capacity several times in recent years
  • Somerset have released Trescothick from assistant coach role for join England

Marcus Trescothick has been confirmed as England’s batting coach as one of three new appointments to the ECB’s elite men’s backroom team.

Sportsmail revealed Trescothick was in line for the job last November following several temporary stints in the role following the sacking of Mark Ramprakash in March 2019.

In addition to the recruitment of the 2005 Ashes winner, England have also taken on Jon Lewis and Jeetan Patel permanently as pace bowling and spin bowling coaches respectively.

Trescothick, 45, begins in a fortnight after Somerset agreed to release him from his assistant coach role.

Richard Dawson has left Gloucestershire to become elite pathway coach – a new role created by the ECB – following Lewis’ promotion from head coach of the Young Lions (England Under-19).

Dawson will also be involved with the full England and England Lions teams at times as part of his remit.

Mo Bobat, the ECB performance director, said: ‘Over the last couple of years, we’ve been working to grow our pool of players that are ready to play for England. 

‘Achieving the type of depth that has enabled us to compete successfully across formats, both home and away.

‘The elite coaches will play an important role in enhancing this depth further, helping us to sustain success over time. We want to be renowned and respected for the quality of our coaching.

‘Working in conjunction with counties, they will have responsibility for developing and preparing current and next-in-line England players whilst also adding value to our England and Lions environments.

‘In addition, they will support the development of our best Under-19 players through our Young Lions programme.’

Thanking Somerset and Gloucestershire, Bobat added: ‘With a busy season of cricket fast approaching, I’m grateful to both Somerset and Gloucestershire for releasing Marcus and Richard in a timely manner and I’m looking forward to our new coaching team working together in the build-up to our summer international programme.

‘I’m also appreciative of the support that all counties have provided over the last 16 months, allowing us to engage their coaches whilst our own positions have remained vacant.’
