Married At First Sight’s Lauren Huntriss addresses telling her co-star she ‘used to be a lesbian’

Former Married At First Sight star Lauren Huntriss insists that she was NEVER a lesbian after sparking backlash from viewers as her season airs in the UK for the firs time

Married At First Sight fans will remember the moment that Lauren Huntriss told her virgin groom Matthew Bennet that she ‘used to be a lesbian’.

But two years on from appearing on the series in Australia, Lauren has addressed the controversial comments she made as her season airs in the UK for the first time.

In a post to Instagram on Wednesday, the 32-year-old explained that she wasn’t a lesbian but instead went through a phase experimenting ‘as most girls do’.

‘Are you guys sitting down? Are you ready for this? Let me tell you what really went down… Firstly, to answer your question. No, I was not a lesbian. I hate titles. I hate labels,’ she said.

‘As you guys know the question was “what is something about you that would shock me?”. Anything would’ve shocked him so me being me – the comedian, stirrer that I am – I thought “what is something that’ll really shock this guy?”.

‘I started telling him I went through a phase in my life, as most girls do, when they’re young adults. I was like 18 at the time. I started experimenting with girls and had crushes on girls.’

Lauren, who met Matthew at the alter during filming in late 2018, said producers were thrilled by her response as it would ‘make great TV’ but asked her to repeat it up to five times and state she ‘used to be a lesbian’.

‘The producers were like “that’s awesome, this is great content, this is going to make great TV but we’ll get you to repeat it and say you used to be a lesbian – keep it short and simple”,’ she said.

‘I argued back and forth with him and said “I don’t label myself as a lesbian nor was I… I don’t feel right about that”.’

However, Lauren said she gave in to the producer’s request due to sleep deprivation and just wanting ‘it done with’.

Lauren, who confirmed she was single in a separate video to her Instagram Stories on Wednesday, added she was approached to star on the 2019 season of Married At First Sight after being approached in an Irish bar.

‘I would never, ever applied for a show like that but when the opportunity comes at me I’m someone that takes every opportunity,’ she said.
