  • First choice was Maximiliano Allegri but he is heading to Juventus again

Real Madrid are eyeing up a move for PSG manager Mauricio Pochettino to replace Zinedine Zidane.

The Frenchman has left the Bernabeu for the second time after seeing his side knocked out of the Champions League by Chelsea and finishing second behind Atletico Madrid in LaLiga.

Initially, Real wanted former Juventus boss Maximiliano Allegri to take the hotseat but the Italian club have moved quickly and he is set to replace Andrea Pirlo after an abject season in Turin.

The Argentine only took over at PSG less than six months ago and is in talks with his former club Tottenham over returning to White Hart Lane.

Jose Mourinho has not been replaced and Ryan Mason came in as the interim boss to see out the season.

Pochettino is understood to be frustrated with his lack of control at PSG and has clashed with sporting director, Leonardo.

But the 49-year-old parted Spurs on bad terms with Daniel Levy and would return to many of the issues he left behind at the club.

That said, the Athletic report that many of the Spurs players are excited by the prospect of their old manager coming back for a second stint and the feeling is mutual.

Real could yet be a more attractive option and he is the preferred choice ahead of club legend Raul and recently departed Inter Milan boss Antonio Conte.

However, it may yet be incredibly difficult for Pochettino to leave PSG, even if there is a will from himself and Real to strike a deal.

He is contracted until the summer of 2022 and the French club would hold the aces in negotiations as they would require hefty compensation.
