Mia Freedman buys $12million Point Piper home after messy court battle over her old mansion

Media businesswoman Mia Freedman has purchased a luxurious $12.75million trophy home in a ritzy waterfront suburb overlooking Sydney Harbour after losing a court battle over an old mansion.

Freedman, also known by her married name Mia Lavigne, snapped up the home in Point Piper in Sydney’s eastern suburbs within weeks of it being listed on the property market for a lofty $13million price tag.

The five-bedroom, four-bathroom property bought by the Mamamia co-founder and her husband Jason Lavigne in September last sold for just $6.1million in 2013.

Listing agent Rich’s Double Bay advertised the home as having a ‘Party Sized’ cabana, a wet edge pool and ‘an enviable lifestyle that is uniquely “Sydney”‘.

The acquisition follows a court ruling the Lavigne family were no longer entitled to live in a plush property in Bellevue Hill they had moved into five years ago with their three children.

The house at centre of the dispute had six bedrooms, a four car garage, a grand entrance foyer, towering ceilings, and panoramic ocean views.

The Lavignes had an agreement with home owner Somna Lala Kumar to rent the the mansion with the option to buy at a later date.

However, following a disagreement over settlement negotiations, Ms Kumar withdrew the contract and ordered the Lavignes out of her home.

One issue the two parties fought over was the leaking roof, which the Lavingnes claimed would cost $251,800 to fix.

The Lavignes took the case to the NSW Supreme Court in a bid to settle damages, interest and costs and to prove their agreement had not been validly terminated.

On Friday, Justice Rowan Darke ruled in Ms Kumar’s favour saying she was entitled to have her home back.

Ms Kumar was also found to be entitled to rent due from December 2019 to June 2020, and a lump sum of $5,875 a week from June 4 until the Lavignes moveD out.

‘I have found that the defendant validly terminated the contract for sale on 11 February 2020,’ Justice Darke said, Sydney Morning Herald reported.

‘On the conclusions I have reached, the plaintiffs were not entitled to remain in occupation after 3 June 2020.

‘The plaintiffs should be allowed a reasonable period in order to vacate the property.’

Freedman is best known as editorial director of Mamamia, which touts itself as the country’s largest digital media network for women.

Her husband is co-founder of the business and has tended to the commercial side of the brand, which they co-founded in 2007.
