Holyfield revealed last month that his team was ‘talking to Mike’s management’ and awaiting a decision.

The 58-year-old is the only man to beat Tyson twice, winning by knock-out in 1996 before their infamous 1997 bout, where Tyson was disqualified for biting his rival’s ear.

Speaking to The Sun last month, Holyfield said: ‘The thing is that if it’s meant to be it will happen, either way, it is what it is.

‘What I can tell you is that my team is talking to Mike’s management, so I’m waiting for a decision. They are communicating right now.

‘The thing is I’m still training for this, I know it will be some day this deal will happen and I’m ready for him. I’m doing OK.’

Holyfield last fought in 2011 when he stopped Brian Nielsen in the tenth round of their heavyweight clash in Copenhagen.

Both he and Tyson have had financial difficulties following their careers. Tyson donated his £7.5m purse from the Jones Jr fight to ‘various charities’ and Holyfield aims to do the same.

Last month he said he believes a fight with Iron Mike would bank at least £150m.

He said: ‘Where an opportunity is available, I like to make the best out of what I have. I believe if I fought Mike the fight will generate $200million. It will be the biggest fight there is. That’s the honest truth.’
