An investigation has been launched after a family sat through a funeral with the wrong body.

The family said their goodbyes to who they thought was their loved one at Canley Crematorium in Coventry – but had no idea it was the wrong body in the coffin.

It’s understood the incorrect coffin was swapped last minute before the cremation took place in November.

Checks supposed to be done before the service were not carried out or were done so incorrectly, according to reports from Coventry Live and so nobody noticed that the wrong coffin was brought to the service.

Staff at the crematorium, which is owned and managed by Coventry City Council, noticed the mistake after the funeral service ended.

A spokesman for the council confirmed a disciplinary process is underway in relation to two members of council staff.

The funeral directors for the service have given their ‘sincere apologies’ to the family, who have now been made aware of the situation.
