Mystery surrounds how a man with head injuries found hobbling along the side of a busy highway was so badly hurt – as investigators probe whether he was thrown out of a car

Mystery surrounds a man found stumbling along the side of a busy New South Wales highway in the middle of the night with serious head injuries. 

Emergency crews were called by passing motorists to the side of the Hume Highway at Paddy’s River, south-west of Wollongong, about 11pm on Thursday night. 

The man was treated by paramedics for serious head and facial injuries before being airlifted by helicopter to hospital about 2.15am in a serious but stable condition. 

The man was airlifted to hospital but investigators have not yet determined how his injuries were received (file image) 

Detectives from the Hume Police District have launched an investigation into the bizarre incident and are yet to interview the injured man. 

Daily Mail Australia understands one line of inquiry being followed up is whether the man could have fallen from a moving vehicle. 

Police are asking for anyone who may have been in the area and have dashcam footage to contact them via Crime Stoppers anonymously on 1800 333 000.
