Nate Diaz slams Conor McGregor for claim Poirier fight should have the ‘McGregor belt’ on the line

‘Put a leprechaun face on there!’ Nate Diaz SLAMS Conor McGregor for Irishman’s claim that potential trilogy fight against Dustin Poirier should have the ‘McGregor belt’ on the line… as long-term rivals continue to spar outside the cage

  • Conor McGregor looks set to fight Dustin Poirier for a third time on July 10
  • The Irishman will be looking to bounce back after a damaging loss in January
  • McGregor claimed that the pair should be fighting for a new ‘McGregor belt’
  • But long-term rival Nate Diaz mocked McGregor for his lavish statement online

Nate Diaz has taken a dig at long-term rival Conor McGregor over the Irishman’s lavish claim that a potential trilogy fight against Dustin Poirier should have a new ‘McGregor belt’ on the line.

Latest reports state that a highly-anticipated third fight between McGregor and Poirier is on the brink of being agreed for July 10, after the American beat McGregor in stunning style back in January at UFC Fight Island.

McGregor, 32, got tongues wagging by posting a tweet saying they should be fighting for his own ‘McGregor belt’, going on to say it could have ‘rose gold and rubies’ or ‘yellow gold and emeralds possibly’ – and Diaz couldn’t resist having a go at his long-term rival.

Responding with his own tweet, 35-year-old Diaz said: ‘UFC can call it the “I get my a** beat then choked out every other fight” championship belt.

‘They can make it yellow gold or rose gold with rubies a diamond? Let’s link UFC open for suggestions… maybe put a leprechaun face on there!’

McGregor’s tweet in full read: ‘I feel it’s time to break out this baby for the next fight. I ask the UFC to please create The McGregor belt.

‘I suggest rose gold and rubies. Think patek rare. Or yellow gold and emeralds possibly. Might be nice also. I’m open to design suggestions. Let’s link up @ufc #TheMcGregorBelt’

Diaz and McGregor’s long-term rivalry is still very much apparent, with two fights in 2016 going one way than the other, with a 1-1 record between them.

However, while McGregor has his eyes firmly set on a third fight with Poirier, Diaz looks set to return against Leon Edwards at UFC 262 on May 15.

Diaz hasn’t fought since November 2019 after losing to Jorge Masvidal at UFC 244 in New York, in a year where he returned to PPV action following a three-year hiatus.

McGregor is actually 1-2 in his last three fights, following the loss to Poirier and a 2018 defeat to unbeaten Khabib Nurmagomedov.

‘The Notorious’ did knock-out Donald Cerrone in 40 seconds at UFC 246 in January 2020, but is now looking to respond again after a damaging defeat in Abu Dhabi two months ago to Poirier.
